I was 13 and remember that day as though it were yesterday. We had little money and even though my mother tried to not let it show I knew things were tight.
She woke me up and said Happy Birthday, I'm sorry I can't do more. She gave me a pencil set with lipgloss with a sad look on her face. I told her it didn't matter to me because I know it's the thought that counts. I knew we didn't have the money for anything and didn't even talk about my upcoming birthday. I might have only gotten something worth a few dollars but knowing that my mother tried was worth more than anything in the world.
